The ancient Chinese remedy acupuncture may help alleviate symptoms of depression.

A research team at the University of Arizona in Tucson studied 38 women who reported they suffered from depression.

Some of the women received acupuncture while the rest received no treatment. The study participants who had acupuncture participated in one of two types of therapy: one therapy focused specifically on treating depression while the other therapy targeted back pain.

The remission rate of the patients who received acupuncture specifically designed for depression was double that of the group that received non-specific acupuncture and was much higher than the women who received no treatment, researchers say.

Acupuncture is a technique in which tiny needles are inserted into the body as a way to restore the body’s natural energy flow.
